The Substitute Facilitator supports art practice with a group of NIAD studio artists with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) in the absence of their regular facilitator. Substitute Facilitators work with NIAD studio artists in both the Virtual Studio and the in-person 23rd Street Studios.
The Studios’ safety and joy rely on collaboration and communication. Substitute Facilitators should be ready to communicate daily logistics, triumphs, concerns and queries. Knowledge of Spanish language is a plus. In our Virtual Studio, access to a personal computer, Zoom, and reliable internet is expected.

Job purpose
To fill in for regular staff in NIAD’s 23rd Street Studio or the Virtual Studio (via Zoom) when they are unavailable to work their assigned schedule.
Duties and responsibilities
Facilitate and support art practice with a group of NIAD studio artists with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) in the absence of their regular facilitator.
Facilitation will take place in one of the following areas:
- In the 23rd Street Studio: an open studio with 6 work areas: Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Fiber, Mixed Media, and Digital/Music/Performance arts.
- In the Virtual Studio: conversational and hands-on practice in areas including but not limited to time-based performance and creative writing, animation and digital arts, drawing and games, advisory and advocacy councils, and digital field trips.
Support continuation of projects and ongoing practices. Work with other facilitators to maintain studio safety, values, coordination and communication, noise levels, artist conversations. Maintain artist confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Knowledge, skills and experience in artmaking methods, materials, and techniques in one of the 6 media.
- Prefer working artist with degree in Fine Arts, or accredited educators with training in art and/or disabilities.
- Experience and sensitivity in working with people with disabilities.
- TB test current within 2 years.
- Background check clearance at both State and Federal levels (to be done via NIAD)
- English language. Desirable: Bilingual English/Spanish
- (In Virtual Studio) Access to personal computer, Zoom, and reliable internet.
Working conditions
Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm (may be flexible depending on need). Some days will be scheduled in advance, other days may be on short notice due to someone calling in ill.
Compensation
$25.25 per hour.
Eligible for sick leave if conditions are met.
Physical requirements
This job requires moving around the studio floor during most of the day (23rd Street Studio) or working at a computer during program hours (Virtual Studio).
