About the exhibition

A murmuration is a flock of thousands moving together, a pattern through the sky, each bird attuned to its nearest neighbors. Made up of individual parts, the whole becomes greater and more powerful than when it stands alone. In the works presented here, individual parts are visible: pieced, gridded, grouped, and arranged with lines, letters, and fields of color. And from the thousands of works that fly together at NIAD, here is only a sample of pieces that somehow talk and listen to their nearest neighbors. A murmuration of applause to all.

About the selector

Alisa Golden writes, makes art, and edits Star 82 Review in Albany, CA. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from California College of the Arts, an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University, and taught bookmaking and letterpress printing at CCA for many years. She recently had a solo show of her art quilts at Piedmont Center for the Arts and is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and California Society of Printmakers. Alisa has also been making video experiences of her book art, and she continues to write stories, poems, and essays for publication. She is the author of Making Handmade Books (Sterling/Lark Crafts)among others, and her book art may be found in the special collections of university and public libraries. When not working in her studio printing, painting, dyeing, or sewing cloth, she might be down by the bay looking for Ospreys.
